It’s National Youth Week from 8 April to 17 April, an annual weeklong celebration of young people. The week will culminate in Youth Homelessness Matters Day on Wednesday 13 April.
Youth Homelessness Matters Day is a campaign organised by the National Youth Coalition for Housing to raise awareness and support for young people who experience or are at the risk homelessness. It’s a call to take action and to recognise that youth homelessness matters and should be prevented. The focus of #YHMD2016 is family and domestic violence, a significant factor that contributes to youth homelessness.
More than 45% of the young people seeking assistance from homelessness services across Australia need help with family violence and family breakdown. 42% of the homelessness population is under 25 years old. 26,000 young homeless Australians are aged 12 to 25 years.
