National Close the Gap Day

16 March 2017 is National Close the Gap Day in Australia. This is a day in which all Australians band together to spread awareness about the health inequality that is affecting Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander Peoples across the country.

Started in 2006, and organised by Oxfam Australia, this national day of awareness campaigns to gradually close the health gap that exists for Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander Peoples by the year of 2030. According to Oxfam Australia, Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander Peoples die 10-17 years younger than other Australians. In 2016 more than 150,000 people took part in over 1,500 events across the country to pledge their support for closing the health gap in Australia.
