April Falls Day
Open Forum | March 2, 2013
April Falls Day, Wednesday 3 April, was initiated to promote falls prevention best practice in hospitals, communities and residential aged care.
With fall related injuries as a major national public health issue with potentially devastating consequences, April Falls Day is about raising awareness of what people can do to stay safe.
This year’s focus is ‘Staying Active and Healthy to prevent falls’.
Why is it important to stay active and healthy?
- Staying physically active is the single most important thing to do to remain fit and independent.
- As people grow older they lose muscle strength and sense of balance. This can lead to a fall.
- To reduce the risk of injury from a fall it is important to include activities that improve balance and increase strength.
