Anniversary of apology to the Stolen Generations
13 February 2017 marks the ninth anniversary of former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s official apology to the Stolen Generations at Parliament House.
The Stolen Generations were the children of Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent who were forcibly removed from their families by the Australian government agencies and church missions between around 1905 and 1969.
The Bringing Them Home Report of the National Inquiry into the Separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children from Their Families was submitted to Liberal Prime Minister John Howard in 1997. The National Apology to the Stolen Generations was one of 54 comprehensive recommendations. Howard and his coalition colleagues rejected calls for a formal government apology.
Kevin Rudd became the first Australian Prime Minister to publicly apologise to the Stolen Generations on behalf of the Australian federal government.
